BLACK SEARS

2023 Black Sears Estate Zinfandel

Head-trained, dry-farmed, planted in 1975 on ol’ St George rootstock atop an old apple orchard, with the bud wood coming from the historic Hayne Vineyard.

Layered, nuanced, peppery and brambly, our Estate Zinfandel is somehow both the quintessence of the varietal and unlike any Zin you've ever tasted. We literally built the winery on the backs of visitors who came for the Cabs and "didn't know a Zin could taste like this!"

Pair with leg of lamb, pepperoni pizza, or anything you can think of to blacken, grill, or smoke.

Visually, the 2023 Black Sears Estate Zinfandel is a deep eggplant purple, highlighted by a ring of bright magenta at the rim. The nose opens with cherry and roses before evolving into notes of eucalyptus, vanilla, and white pepper. On the palate, this is a wine that feels bright and light, despite numbers that might suggest otherwise, with an herbal and earthy accompaniment to the fresh, red fruit. Soft and welcoming on the approach, it blossoms into a bouquet of bing cherries, strawberries, orange zest, and black pepper on the palate. The finish is all mineral, earthiness, herbs and spices – the flavors of a mountaintop forest whose thirst has, at last, been extinguished.

Pair with leg of lamb over rosemary, thyme and garlic, sauteed spinach, brown sugar-glazed carrots, and fingerling potatoes, followed by a cherries jubilee flambeed with kirsch for dessert. Set the volume knob to a festive 7, and drop the needle on Talking Heads’ (and Brian Eno’s) masterpiece, Remain in Light, and let the water hold you down. Then open Tony Tulathimutte’s hilariously preposterous collection of stories for our current brain-rot, AI internet-meme zeitgeist: Rejection. Ponder whether things are so completely absurd now that truth and irony both could be obsolete within a generation.
